Spring 2008 Green Map for UWT

GreenmapuwtSM.jpg
Introduction
UWT Eco-art students collaborated on this quicky Green Map during 3 weeks of the spring quarter 2008.
About this Map

15 students collaborated on this project (spring 2008) including Angela Rueber, Robbi Firestone, Ly Dinh, Elizabeth Young, Nicole Hokett, Briana Hickey, Ann Vankirk, Ailsa Hopper, Beth Elliot, James Sinding and Megan Zaback. Students tried to envision what they wanted to see on their campus, from organic community gardens to a daycare center. More unusual, but exciting possibilities were massage stations in central locations, a wailing wall for returning vets and their families, cafes that serve organic and locally grown food, prepared by students in the envisioned food prep program.

Inspired by a workshop led by Beth Ferguson on Vashon island, two students returned to campus all fired up and helped to facilitate the collaboration. Research was done over a two week period, icons were printed out and glued on and the painting was done in one morning workshop. Later in the week, the map was brought to a meeting of administrators and architects who were planning the future of the campus. The Green Map hung in the central atrium on campus for many months before we were asked to take it down. Whether the map had an impact on the plans for the campus or not is yet to be seen. But one student, Kayomi Wada, from an earlier eco-art class went on to the Master's program @ UWT and as part of her work on campus, has facilitated the beginnings of an organic gardening project on campus. The raised beds are cared for by the community and students and food is offered to local homeless shelters. We will be designing more Green Maps in the coming years.
