Wendy at Green Map's blog

On the Way to Copenhagen!

Nicole Mau, Carlos Martinez and Akiko Rokube help me get organized for COP15 (not shown, Te Baybute)

Wendy's COP15 blogs include:
Overview | First Impressions | Green Mapmakers Present | Day 3 | Cop 15's Major March| Cop 15 Finale

I'm just about ready to leave the office, and looking forward to meeting and working with a wide range of people involved in CO2 emissions reduction and climate healthy living converging at the United Nations COP15 event in Copenhagen.

Although I won't be there throughout the whole 10 days, I expect to learn quite a bit at the Green Mapmaking panel and our other events, listed on our COP15 page.

I'm using miles, not money, to pay for the flight. I have a homestay so thanks to my host and the many civil society groups who have set up meal venues around the city, this trip is costing very little, none of which is coming from Green Map's budget (except our outreach postcards and maps). I'll find a good way to offset the CO2 from my flight, too, and report back later.

So see you in Copenhagen! I'll be on a rented bike with the sticker below, and at all the events listed here, so watch for me there!

Putting Social Innovation on the Map!

New York staff at Green Map System are pleased to be working with the DESIS Lab, a unique design for social innovation and design partnership based at Parsons The New School of Design.

The Rockefeller Foundation has awarded The New School a prestigious New York City Cultural Innovation Fund award to support the work of the DESIS Lab, as further described in their blog at desis.parsons.edu/. The project will utilize the Open Green Map platform and begin by discovering and mapping great examples of social innovation and sustainability in the neighborhood surrounding Green Map's global office. The goal is to promote these activities, help them improve with appropriate design tools and teaching activities, and to foster comparative research. read more »

Green Map at COP15

With COP 15's uncertain conclusion drawing nearer, we encourage everyone to do all they can everyday for a sustainable, climate-healthy future. 'If the people will lead, the leaders will follow!'

My experience in Copenhagen was amazing! Meeting many important people, sharing effective approaches in an open forum, experiencing the special cultural, political and social resources for COP15, and being part of the flow of ideas (and bicycles) throughout the city was excellent, uplifting and hopeful. We 'soft-launched' the mobile phone version of the Open Green Map (simply click GreenMap.org on your phone to access the alpha version), collaborated and planned with Green Map projects from 5 countries, too.

My blog posts include: On our Way | First Impressions | Green Mapmakers Present | Cop 15, Day 3 | Cop 15's Major March | Cop 15 Finale

Special thanks to Wiser Earth.org for including my posts, and for the many people who helped make this happen.

More on climate healthy Green Maps is in this recent newsletter or download a press release at the bottom of this page. Our award-winning globally sharediconography includes Climate Changed Area, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Site and Vulnerable Area, along with many other symbols for sites that address or impact our climate healthy future. read more »

Index Awards – In Copenhagen and Beyond

Since our interactive mapping website, the Open Green Map, is a finalist for the Index Awards, I’m traveling to Copenhagen, where the winners of this Danish prize will be announced on August 28. My journey starts in Helsinki Finland, where I will be meeting with our 2008 trainee, Miikka Lammela, who is helping to develop our mobile Open Green Map application for the iPhone – we are also creating a mobile website that will work with any internet enabled ‘smartphone’. Development is going well, and we’ll soon be posting news on the beta launch of this great resource for travelers as well as residents. Special thanks to Miikka, our board members and great developers Thomas Turnbull and Stan Wiechers, designers Akiko Rokube and Te Baybute, and to Openflows Community Technology Lab. read more »
