A joint Hamilton City Council and Community Environmental Programmed (CEP) initiative. Includes environmental, historical and cultural information about the city of Hamilton. Also has a (green) transportation component: a cycling map and a bus map. The map is aimed at both tourists looking to explore the city and residents looking to rediscover their city.

Washtenaw County and City of Ann Arbor Green Map

The original map was created for display at the National Town Hall Meeting in Detroit in 1999. There are four maps included in the foldout: The city of Ann Arbor, and an enlarged image of Ann Arbor's downtown area; Washtenaw County, where Ann Harbor is located and Ypsilanti Downtown Area. Seems to be aimed local residents.

The printed version of this map is very large in size (37" by 24"). The area displayed is that of Pittsburgh and Southwestern PA, with information about each county, including historical significance and places of interest. It does a good job of highlighting both rural (SW PA) and urban (Pittsburgh) amenities. Does a good job promoting user participation through the website.

The Berkeley GREEN Map

Includes a detailed historical background as well as some of the current initiatives instituted by Berkley's that promote environmental sustainability. Includes places of consumption, like stores that sell green products and organic markets, as well as public parks and free places of recreation. Plans to include transportation options in next map. The map is very minimalist and user-friendly because of its design. It includes a lot of information, probably because of Berkeley's eco-friendly nature.

The LES Guide to Pay Phones Hot Lines & Other Services For Teenagers

Includes a map of pay phone locations on the LES as well as phone numbers and locations of services for teenagers, including reproductive health services and after school educational programs.
This map is particularly valuable since information about reproductive health services is not readily available to teenagers. The map makers also reviewed each service, allowing the map user to know what to expect if they choose to contact it.

Find the current SF Green Map project at http://www.greenmap.org/greenhouse/en/user/46.

The 1998 edition includes a good mixture of cultural and historical locations that are of interest, green businesses, and suggestions on how to involved politically. Includes transportation options and protest points, encouraging users to participate in social action. Can be used by temporary visitors and long term residents. The project was led by Sandrine Demchuk, and team's map is very nicely designed.

This map includes a mixture of environmental and cultural sites. Since the map is printed in English and lists hotel locations, it is most likely aimed at tourists. Lists the criteria for site inclusion in each section. Also includes locations where EcoMap is available for pick up. Subdivides the map into small sections which makes locating sites easier. The grid that this map is on makes it significantly easier to locate sites.

NYC's Chinatown Green Map - Mapa Verde del Barrio Chino de NY

This Green Mapmaking process was part of Green Map staff member Carlos Martinez's university thesis research project: Urban ecotourism proposal towards the revitalization of public spaces by means of usage, valuation and conservation. Case of study: New York's Chinatown. Carlos also wrote this profile.

This research's study area was defined by concentration of Asian residents over 50% (based on U.S. Census 2000) and the location of nearby garment manufacturing shops. While the area surrounding the garment shops does not have a very high population of Asian residents, this area is an economic and sociocultural cornerstone of Chinatown. After these boundaries were defined the author in his role as an external agent or observer adopts as analytic and diagnosis method the historic-hermeneutic approach in its ethnographic version.

In a special way this research materialized a video-documentary and this Green Map, creative and participative education tools of environmental empowerment. Other supporting Green Maps were created for this research. You will find them in the thesis paper (available upon request). Both Spanish and English introductions to the project can be found in GreenAppleMap.org's Our NYC Maps section.

Some of the aspects addressed in this Green Map project were: mobility (bike lanes, pedestrian zones, bike racks, bridges, plazas, mass transit stations), tourist info (kiosks, museums, etc.), special places (parks, community gardens, public art, churches) and many more with special consideration on public spaces.

Singapore Green Map

Initiated by the Singapore Environment Council and the Green Volunteers Network, “Project Green Map” was first launched in June 2000 as an attempt to bring together all of Singapore’s eco-resources into a single publication.

Singapore is a small island city nation of 4.5 million blessed with abundant rain and sun and thus bountiful nature. We have a developed economy but still manage to preserve a good portion of land as nature reserves, parks and greenery. There are large numbers of terrestrial and aquatic species.

With the Green Map we wanted to raise public awareness about the abundant nature we still had and to overturn the view that Singapore is a concrete city with nothing green left to save.

Created in just six weeks, the very first Green Map was created for visitors coming to the United Nations to work on the Earth Summit's Agenda 21 in the spring, prior to the big event in Rio de Janeiro. It included 143 sites where signs of progress toward sustainability could be experienced in person, citywide. It was conceived by Wendy Brawer, who worked closely with Hal Drellich, Bill DiPaolo and many members of NYC's emerging eco-design community to publish 10,000 copies of the Green Apple Map. The first Green Appple Design Tour took place alonside its launch, and a second map was created for this one-day event.

Wendy's company, Modern World Design, received great feedback and many suggestions for the next edition. She and Hal worked throughout the fall, and in December 1992, the second Green Apple Map was published, again in an edition of 10,000 copies. This map featured a more extensive list of eco-resources in NYC, aimed at both visitors experiencing the city for the first time, and long time residents who re-discover the city from a fresh perspective. The map includes snippets of relevant historical and statistical information about the city, and used eye-catching graphic icons to signify the different kinds of sites.

Because of the many excited queries about making a map like this we received from people around the world, we feel this is the map that inspired the initiation of the global Green Map System in 1995. Much more about the history of Green Map System is in the About section of this website, and in the Maps section, find out about subsequent editions of the Green Apple Map.

LoMap

LoMap is a colorful youth-authored Green Map of Lower Manhattan. This Green Apple Map brings together the expressions of youth from different neighborhoods, backgrounds and age groups (from 7 to 19). Although composed by adults at Green Map System, it features youth and family-oriented natural and cultural sites that have been nominated, described and drawn by 250 young people.

The LoMap methodology was created to involve as many youth as possible in Green Mapmaking, even for a brief time. LoMap's coordinator, Beth Ferguson, gave each group an orientation to sustainability at the community level, and encouraged thoughtful responses. Many of the 20 schools and clubs involved took neighborhood field trips and extended the lesson by making their own Green Maps, writing the Mayor about problems they noticed, or presenting and exchanging their site nominations with others in their group.

This vibrant guide was first published on paper and on-line in April 2001. A manual for replicating the project was completed soon after. LoMap proved to be very popular in the aftermath of 9-11, as people sought out a healing image of Lower Manhattan.

LoMap was completely updated and reprinted in summer 2004. We added many new sites and features, including a Spanish, Chinese and English legend reflecting the diversity of the families living downtown. Although it is currently out of print, you can download the interactive PDF - it has been quite popular with tourists as well as residents.

At the end of 2006, Buckminster Fuller Institute launched the interactive EARTHscope LoMap. This animated version (including videos) is one of the first in a growing, global library of geo-stories about the state of the Earth, our communities and possible futures. We're happy that LoMap has appeared in many publications over the years - we may even make an updated edtion one of these days!

Powerful Green Map of NYC

Dreamed up during the summer Blackout of 2003, this Green Map was created to promote energy awareness and action in New York. It took us 2.5 years to complete it as we continually found more resources to put on the map. Published in February 2006, it encompasses three citywide views showing the impacts of our current energy choices, everyday and easy things you can do to conserve energy, and smart energy investments.

This map is designed for general audiences, who can find all kinds of useful information that will save money and resources at the same time. We have included a glossary of terms and images collected around town, celebrity quotes and online, there are resources written for Spanish and Chinese-speaking New Yorkers. At our website, you can also download an interactive PDF, a print quality version, and more.

We printed 100,000 free copies on recycled paper and expect to complete distribution in spring 2008. Copies can be picked up at Greenmarkets, libraries, conferences, community centers and at eco-events citywide and we continually fulfill requests for bulk copies every week. In summer-fall 2007, we'll be releasing curriculum tools for middle and high school students based on the Powerful Green Map.

Green Apple Map (1997-2000 editions)

We found that our original 1992 Green Apple Map projects gave users a unique sustainable perspective and provided a view unlike any other map of this city. While initiating the global Green Map project became the priority, mapmaking in NYC took a break. There was a five-year gap between editions, although our site data collection kept growing.

The third citywide edition of the Green Apple Map was our first to use the newly minted global Green Map Icons (Copenhagen's 1996 edition was the first published using them). We partnered with Metropolis Magazine for this edition because we admired their approach to sustainability (http://www.metropolismag.com/cda/sustainable.php) and they would help us reach an important demographic - the designers and decision-makers following urban issues.

We did all the research and site collection, and Metropolis staff took care of the most the design and fundraising, and helped with the editing and outreach. 65,000 free copies were printed in March 1997, roughly two-thirds went to Metropolis' regional subscribers, and the rest were distibuted through Greenmarkets, events, green shops, gardens, etc.

A year later, the demand for the map kept growing, and the map was revised (over 100 changes) and reprinted by Metropolis. We did more of the distribution this time. It had a rather clumsy numbering system that matched our first online interactive Green Apple Map (it debuted in spring 1998 and lasted about 5 years before its underlying technology became obsolete). Around this time, we also added travelogues and began working with local schools and groups on their own Green Maps, and began the process of developing educator resources. By the turn of the century, the global Green Map network had reached 100 projects, and 36 unique Green Maps were published!

In 2000, we created an all new edition of the Green Apple Map, with printing supported by Earth Day New York, who distributed 65,000 of the 100,000 copies! Although we did not work with Metropolis magazine, Will van Roden, their former art director, designed this edition, too. There were so many new sites in town that the map was quite crowded - we decided the next Green Apple Map would be our first thematic edition (the result was the energy themed Powerful Green Map), and to experiment with a 'close up' view of a part of the city (the result was 2001's LoMap). Still, there was a wonderful response to our 2000 edition, and many requests for copies, long after we had run out.

Compost Green Map of Manhattan

Now Published! OUR THIRD EDITION! FALL 2008
NYC would be a whole lot greener if we all composted our food and yard waste. This Green Map provides great ideas about how and where to compost in Manhattan - and a connection to the pioneers who will help you turn waste into a rich resources with minimum fuss and mess.

This map was created by Green Map System and Lower East Side Ecology Center. It includes a chart of what can be composted in the average NYC pile, where to learn about composting and vermiculture and spots where you can leave your food and garden scraps. Online, there are case studies of businesses that compost, and more.

We choose this theme because of the many benefits of composting - it's the most energy efficient form of recycling too, and NYC could really use the rich soil created by composting. We feel the map will help composting become more popular. We started by charting Manhattan's resources, but within a few months, have had several requests to co-create an online Composting Green Map charting all of NYC. Now, you can explore the first sites in the participatory Open Green Map platform. Please click <a href="http://www.opengreenmap.org/en/greenmap/compost-green-map-manhattan">here</a>, explore and enhance this map!

The Craik Green Map was created to highlight areas and activities in the local area relating to sustainable living. It shows the town of Craik and some of its surrounding are, including Arm Lake and the Arm River Valley. The map was designed by Paul Stinson, and overlays a road map and Green Map Icons over an aerial photograph of Craik in the spring. Since the maps publication, a number of new initiatives have been developed, which will be included in the next edition.

Green Map Neusiedl am See

This pilot project dealt with existing planning instruments and acts supporting the concept of sustainable development in Neusiedl am See complemented by the concept of Green Mapmaking.

Step by step…
Data collection started during the Erasmus Intensive Programme “Intensive Program Responsible Use of Soil and Land and Regional Development” (IPSOIL II) in spring 2006 and continued well into autumn. Belatedly, “Ne´Mo”, was added to the map in December 2006.
A draft selection of criteria and a comprehensive list of definitions was complied between November 2006 and February 2007. The list needed some update and refinement during the stage of data analysis in spring 2007.
A first version of the map was drafted between May and July 2007 using the free, open source software GRASS 6.2.
At this stage, I had to take a break for months in order finish my thesis and to graduate.
To be able to finalize the map, representatives of organisations displayed were contacted by email in January and again, in March 2008.
This first edition of Green Map Neusiedl am See was finalised and published in April 2008.

Participation of stakeholders
Stakeholders were temporarily involved at various stages of the project. During the collection of data and the selection of criteria they provided many excellent ideas.
Later, private organisations displayed by the map were contacted by email and asked to consent to being mentioned by the map.
The project was presented to the residents of Neusiedl am See and the media on three occasions, i.e. in March 2006, June 2006 and March 2007.

Experiences
Well, they are mixed, of course.
While collecting data and explaining the ideas underlying my work, many residents of Neusiedl am See I talked to showed interest in the project and provided many new insights. Some stakeholders, on the other hand, asked me why I was not mapping one of the neighbouring communities, since they had much more to show.
Unfortunately, no one really wanted to participate continuously in the project.
Many stakeholders displayed by the draft version of the map were not interested at all or ignored my mails completely (so I will never know).
One firm dealing with sailing in the broader sense was offended by my suggestion to be included due to their offer of second hand boats and repair services. Unfortunately, they have not responded to any of my mails, so far. Instead, they contacted my university’s rectorate demanding an explanation for this perceived economic degradation. Fortunately, I had graduated already, so it was not my university’s business any more. The site has been deleted nevertheless.

Status
This project is available to anyone interested. It can be developed further, possible follow-up projects include a youth map, an energy map or an extended, regional map centering Lake Neusiedl (e. g. following the the boundaries of UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve Lake Neusiedl, World Heritage Site Lake Neusiedl …etc.).

Pedaling Brooklyn's Gardens

In the summer of 1999, North Brooklyn Recycle-A-Bicycle focused on the relationship between trasportation and open space. Community gardens are unique open spaces, reclaimed from illegal parking lots and dumping grounds.

A small band of students and volunteers scoured North Brooklyn for gardens and talked to community leaders about their neighborhoods.

The map shown not yet finished...
Most of work done by school children: after field work much emphasis is given to discussion before the greenmaps are drawn. These are never finished, input from public will modificate them. The online version is (almost) always current, but some print copies will be ready for the population, tourists, press...

Summer 1999 students of North Brooklyn Recycle-A-Bicycle Mapmaking program cycled to investigate issues of garbage and waste transfer stations in New York City.

Students chose to chart the city-wide garbage crisis after learning that their neighborhood was a planned transfer site for NYC's residential waste. The map features the middle-school youths' drawings and text, and includes facts and hints for reducing, reusing and recycling in NYC.

"Community people guide us through each neighborhood's problems. We visited landfills, transfer stations, recycling plants, and waterfront neighborhoods and explore solutions."

On this Green Map, you will find ways to reduce, reuse and recycle garbage, as well as examples of green businesses.

During the summer of 2000 students of North Brooklyn Recycle-A-Bicycle biked to explore land use along the Brooklyn waterfront.

"Environmental experts guided us through sites including a sewage treatment plant, factories, and waterfronts parks. We even found the printer who prints NYC subway maps. We visited community activist groups working to clean up the waterfront."

Look inside to see what else NB-RAB discovered and what you can do.
