A Greenmap promoting the awareness of Johannesburg's eco-systems.
About this Map

The Egoli Greenmap is an advocacy and education map about eco-systems and open space of Johannesburg. It is situated in the cities north eastern areas.

The area that is on the Egoli Greenmap contains about 5% of Johannesburg's open space.

There are many people do not know much about these spaces. The map shows the important connections between them and the interesting features that make them special.

The map includes wetlands, grasslands, ridges and rivers. Its also has some noteworthy historical sites.

Our team consists of dedicated volunteers, with a wide range of talents including community work, design, architecture and environmental studies.

Community Outcomes

The community outcomes of the map have been important. The areas in side of the map have been under threat. The coverage of the map has helped raise awareness about these areas. The map was submitted as part of an environmental impact assessment public comment. It showed the detrimental effects of having large scale shopping centers instead of the local wetland. It was part of a larger process that lead to the decision to develop the wetland to be halted indefinitely. It has also lead to more community interest in area. Greenmap has done walks in the area for local hiking clubs. There are also moves a foot to plan for biking as a means of recreation.
