Visitability

Last night, at a monthly meeting of the Craik Sustainable Living project (CSLP), we had a guest speaker talk about "visitability". This was a new term to me, dealing with the concept of making not only businesses and public buildings, but private homes also, accessible to people with physical disabilities. This includes things such as accessible entryways (sufficiently wide doors for wheelchairs, ramps, and accessible bathrooms). I will learn more about this, and already am sure that this is something that needs to be on the next version of our Green Map.

Maps dealing with disability and accessibility

Interesting...

There have been a few Green Map projects that have dealt with similar issues. I think Clackmannanshire Green Map did something, though I can't see any details on their profile. But you can contact them (Mike and Enid) via their profile page (http://greenmap.org/greenhouse/user/69) - they're really great folk.

Yokahoma in Japan also had a Green Map made by wheelchair users I think. You could try contacting Misako via her profile http://greenmap.org/greenhouse/user/52 to get more details of this.

And Cuba did a map too, covering accessibility. They don't have a profile on here (big issues with web access in Cuba) but you can read about it at this page: http://greenmap.org/greenhouse/resources/story_intro/cuba04

If anyone knows of any other Maps covering this issue, please add your comments!

Disability Access / Mapping

Hi I am currently doing a project looking a maps that will document the accessability of local communities by people with disabilities.

The aim of project is to work with people with disabilities and get them to document what facilitates or negates access to the biult environment. I hope to do this by using GPS enabled mobile phones wher the person with a disability takes a picture of an object eg ramp. The person would note wether the object was accessiable or inaccessiable and why.

This information would then be emailed from phone to web site and mapped.

The aim of project is to look at how inclusive communities are for people with disabilities.

I am currently looking at meta data to be used as tags eg stanadrdised data items for ramp etc and what makes them inappropraite eg lenght / angle / broken surface.

I am also considering a range of icons that could beused.

The information from this site I hope will be used by local communties to determine how accessabile a community is and what needs to be done.

If any one is interested in this I would welcome any thoughs or leads.
