We'd Love to Hear from You!

Today, before 2011 is over, please make a donation to Green Map System.

Your gift will impact hundreds of communities around the world in their quest to become more resilient, just and verdant.

Today, more than 60 countries have registered Green Map projects – each of these maps highlights and supports the green economy and thousands of good jobs on farms and cafes, in architecture and construction, in education and social innovation, in parks and along the waterfront in cities, towns and campuses where sustainability is taking root. Your tax deductible donation helps to promote and spread best practices, policies and projects that are making a significant contribution to the environment and climate we all share.

Your support means we can effectively address every opportunity to support local leaders. We are committed to inclusive participation and to creating the very best tools. Our roster of new participating countries, exciting new partnerships, and recognition by prestigious social media and design awards affirms that we are on the right track. Indeed, this week, we received new recognition as we were awarded the NetSquared Invitational. This is the 8th honor for the Open Green Map social mapping platform, and the 23rd award for our work!

2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year. We are extending our award-winning iconography to encourage more ‘theme Green Maps’ covering local food and energy resources, culture and ecotourism, informal education and climate justice. We’re exploring open source for ongoing development and sharing. We’re preparing for another surge in participation as the Earth Summit - Rio+20 and social movements like Occupy ignites new passion for the environment.

At GreenMap.org/donate, you’ll find several good ways to contribute to us, directly online, through Global Giving or 1% for the Planet, by mail, and so on.

2012 will be our 20th year of creating Green Maps in NYC and our 17th year of serving Green Mapmakers around the world. Please join us and support a more vibrant environment and healthier future for all!

Thank you and best wishes for 2012 from Green Map System!

Victor J. Papanek Social Design Award

Papanek Social Design Award competition by the new Victor J Papanek Foundation -

Victor Papanek was a true pioneer, thought by many to be the "papa" of the modern eco-design movement. His books, including Design for the Real World, made a deep impression on Green Map’s founder as our movement was forming in the early 1990’s. Wendy Brawer states, "I hold Victor Papanek in high esteem and I am delighted to take part in the award ceremony and the exhibitions at University of Applied Arts Vienna (11/10/11–1/31/12) and in NYC (Dates TBA)".

The Papanek Social Design Award is our second honor in 2011. Special thanks to all the jurors of this competition as well as Treehugger Best of Green, which awarded us Best Eco App for a Smartphone this spring.

60 Countries!!

There are now Green Mapmakers in 60 countries, representing all inhabited continents. We reached this milestone as local projects got underway recently in Tibet, Serbia & Macedonia and Belgium. Latvia and The Gambia joined us in 2011, too. Click GreenMap.org/home to see where our network is growing and get our list of over 775 cities, towns and villages with Green Map projects
here.

Upcoming Events

In NYC and interested in civil society’s response to crisis? Our director will be giving a short talk on our work this arena at Design Like You Give a Damn LIVE this Saturday, Oct 22.

We’ll be tabling on Oct 25, celebrating the
anniversary of GreenSpaces shared work space.

Green Map System is part of the Local Spokes coalition, which is hosting three Visioning Sessions on the opportunities for Lower East Side and Chinatown residents to benefit from bicycling.
Summer News from Green Map

If you cannot read this or see links below, please click: http://www.greenmap.org/greenhouse/en/node/10927

Summer brings a fresh crop of interns to our office to pitch in on local and global projects, now over 760 worldwide. In 2011, the team included current university students and recent graduates from the metropolitan region (even our Japanese-American intern was born nearby!). We are so grateful to Melanie Reed (Cornell U (home: Long Island), Brigid Keating (New York U (home: NJ), Aaron Miller (UConn (home: NJ), Alexandra (Alex) Purdy (U of Richmond (home: CT), and Yutaka Nakashima (Hiroshima U (home: Brooklyn) and we wanted to share highlights of their accomplishments with you.

Cycling for Healthier Neighborhoods

In May, our first event involving all the interns took place in a local community garden. At the launch of theLocal Spokes bicycling coalition, our interns led participatory mapmaking exercises with Lower East Side and Chinatown community members. They collected ideas about bicycling and urban design, adding a qualitative perspective to the larger survey being undertaken by Local Spokes this summer (find it at LocalSpokes.org). Each intern contributed to research and planning in different ways. Later in the summer, Alex and Aaron presented their geography projects to the ‘Youth Ambassadors’, helping these high school students add sustainability, mapping and a global perspective to their learning experience. With so many in our network around the world charting bicycling and promoting this nonpolluting, convivial form of transportation, we are hoping the engagement model we are co-creating in our home community will become a valuable resource throughout our movement.

Sustainable East Village Walking Tour

Reaching out to new audiences this summer, our interns created East Village walking tours in June and July. Brigid, Melanie and Alex researched our neighborhood and selected among a wide range of sustainability sites, including 45 community gardens, historic and green buildings (including one LEED platinum example), greenmarkets, parks, renewable energy and bicycling sites, recycling centers and composting drop offs. They created a Green Map that can be printed by anyone who wants to explore on their own and gave tours to Meet Up participants and visiting student groups. “Crowd-funded’ though IOBY, it was a great way for them to learn directly how to locate and describe green sites for our interactive maps, and gave them experience in social media as they promoted these events. We expect that their Green Map will be expanded by other interns in the future.

Surveying Latin America

Green Mapmakers have been active in Latin America since the 1990’s but until this summer, there’s never been in-depth survey of accomplishments and impacts undertaken in Spanish and Portuguese. Fortunately, Alex Purdy is studying Latin American geography and culture and undertook a survey and assessment of the influence of the 50 diverse Green Map projects on Latin America’s economic, environmental, and social sustainability. She has a Bonner Center for Civic Engagement fellowship supporting her time through completion of an extensive report this fall. We are delighted with her initial findings, including some wonderful Green Maps that were previously unknown to us! These will be added to our Archive and shared globally online. Watch for news this fall on the completion of Alex’s report. We invite you to contribute to next steps to support, extend and improve the Mapa Verde network.

Green Recovery in Japan

Yutaka has been focused on supporting our network in Japan as they undertake “green recovery” following the triple disaster the country experienced this spring. Helping to restore hope, an exhibition of local and global Green Maps was created for the Zenrin Map Museum in Kita-Kyushu by Risa Ishikawa, a talented designer who worked with us in 2008. Thanks to the local Green Mapmakers at NGO Satoyama, this exhibit has gained the interest of many and will travel soon to more cities. Supporting her effort, Yutaka has also been working with Green Map Japan, which is providing workshops and newsletters at the exhibit, and supporting new communities’ participation. A great new book about Aichi Prefecture’s Green Maps also debuted.

In addition, Yutaka has been translating the interface for Open Green Map, managing a team of volunteers to accomplish this important task. Japanese is the 8th language on the platform! With plans to continue working with us this fall, Yutaka’s background in ‘placemaking’ is a great match for Green Map System.

This is just a portion of work undertaken this summer. Next month, when our interactive Energy Map of NYC debuts during Climate Week, we’ll share with you how the LEED buildings, green infrastructure and other power generation and conservation resources were collected and shared, too.

Training the Future

Thus far in 2011, we have worked with 9 great interns. Each has taken part in meetings, written blogposts, led projects and experienced the power of our engagement tools first-hand. Each of these emerging leaders has contributed so much to Green Map System, and we look forward to seeing how their time with us impacts their future life and career choices. Your support means that we can continue to welcome fresh new energy into our office and then send them back out into the world better equipped to address sustainability, social equity and community engagement challenges.

Donations to Green Map System are tax-deductible and can be mailed to PO Box 249, NYC 10002, or made online at Global Giving or our own website. Potential interns are welcome to apply by sending a cover letter and resume to info (at) greenmap (dot) org. Thank you and enjoy the rest of the season!

May 2011 News from Green Map System

Local Focus

New York City is in bloom – and we’re involved in projects to help it bloom even more. So this month, our newsletter highlights Green Map’s involvement in an important new greening initiative in our city as well as in the nearby Sustainable Jersey - Green Map project. We have events coming up to share with you which were made possible in part by the extraordinary efforts of our interns and volunteers, so important to our organization and network!

Local Spokes – a New Neighborhood Coalition

With so many benefits to riding a bicycle, Green Mapmakers worldwide have highlighted cycling resources on their maps. Our own NYC editions have included bicycle lanes, repair shops and advocacy organizations, as seen at OpenGreenMap.org/nyc. In addition, our Green Apple Cycling tours* explore the green infrastructure, gardens, solar sites and other resources found in our neighborhoods. Recently, we have become part of the new Lower East Side – Chinatown Bicycling Coalition, known as Local Spokes. Supported by the JM Kaplan Fund, we are working with 8 diverse housing, justice and cycling organizations to engage the community in a new vision for cycling in Lower Manhattan. Follow the project at facebook.com/localspokes and join the Garden Party Launch on May 25 (rain date May 26) in the East Village. Local Spokes' goal is to create a replicable model for cycling resources that can impact neighborhoods across and far beyond our city.

*On Monday May 23, take part in our annual Green Apple Cycling Tour and celebrate Bike Month NYC. Science Educator Roy Arezzo of the awesome New York Harbor High will be along for this informative ride.
The Sustainable Jersey - Green Map Project

Last summer we took part in the Jersey City ‘Farm in the City’ workshop. This event not only led to new policies taking root in the city, it also led to our meeting with Sustainable Jersey and a grant from the Geraldine R Dodge Foundation to work with a sampling of diverse New Jersey cities’ Green Teams. These teams address over 100 sustainable actions to gain points toward certification. Citizen engagement is part of the process and teams will be introduced to Green Map’s strategy for engagement through a workshop and webinar in June. Select teams will be offered staff support on mapmaking strategy, communications and outreach towards completion and distribution of a printed or interactive Green Map. More about this project is online at GreenMap.org/snj.

Hats off to our Interns

As the summer approaches we say goodbye to marketing intern Jinhwa Ju (South Korea) and interaction design intern Isadora Dantas (Brazil). You’ll see Jinwha’s photos, taken as she worked with Joseph Panglinan (New Jersey) on the Green Map Archives, our Gel workshop, social media and more. Everyone contributed to the Festival of New Ideas, including Yutaka Nakashima (Japan), who is now helping us support the efforts of Green Map Japan after this winter’s horrific disasters. Updating the Compost Green Map with the support of the Manhattan Borough President, the Solid Waste Advisory Board and Citizens Committee has been just one of many projects to which the interns have contributed. We’ll be welcoming several new interns this summer as we keep up our tradition of mentoring rising stars and getting the job done with fresh energy. Their support is crucial to us!

Please pitch in and support our interns, our work in NYC and with Green Map projects worldwide. Join our events, use Green Maps to connect with local resources and do all you can to promote a healthier future for us all.

Great News! Green Map wins the Treehugger Best of Green 2011 in Science and Technology: Best Eco App for a Smart Phone! We are delighted to receive a Best of Green award two years in a row from the esteemed Treehugger.com.

Moreover, our smart phone app has a brand new feature! Now, anytime you come upon a natural, cultural or green living site that belongs on the interactive Open Green Map, simply tap in GreenMap.org on your mobile. Click Add a Site, and voila! The phone senses your location so you can quickly add the site’s title, description and choose Green Map Icons. As soon as your local Mapmaker approves it, your suggestion will be available, live on the Open Green Map. If you have an iPhone and have downloaded the Green Map app from the iTunes Store, you can learn even more about the people around the world who create Green Maps and peruse their printed editions, photos, etc. Find out more about mobile Green Maps here.

No smart phone? No worries! On your computer, select Suggest A Site on the tab above any of the Open Green Maps. There are now over 16,000 sites, and there is plenty of room for your thoughtful suggestions.

100% Match for Your Donation!

IOBY – In Our Back Yard – a New York City micro-funding resource has arranged for matching of all donations, up to $200! We need your help to raise just $1300 to develop, promote, host and document 4 different kinds of summer events designed to engage new audiences using the Meetup.com platform. Not only do we expect to directly involve a few hundred new participants in NYC, we plan to share the best outcomes and ideas with our global network. Pitch in today and help us create exciting, inviting, affordable models for community engagement!

Meetup with Green Map in NYC – double your support for our local summer initiatives here at IOBY.org today! All are welcome - it’s tax-deductible and a great way to activate new participation in sustainable communities, near and far.

If you cannot read this or see links below, please click: http://GreenMap.org/greenhouse/en/node/9464

We don't yet know the full extent of the unprecedented disaster in Japan but our hearts go out to each impacted person and their communities. Our network includes 70 Japanese cities and towns, and we want to assure you that many participants have let us know they are OK - stunned but doing OK, thankfully. With so much being lost in an instant, and so much uncertainty about the future, we hope community life can become more resilient. We have begun to discuss how Green Mapmaking can help in the recovery effort – let us know if you would like to know more about this or wish to offer help directly to some of our exemplary projects in Japan.

This feeling of wanting to pitch in and do all we can magnifies the importance of our network’s efforts since 1995 – giving people the means to highlight local resources for more ecologically-sound, climate-smart and healthier living, including local food, energy generation, low impact mobility and collaboration.

To support so many different people and situations, we continue to create ways to support discussion, research and communications in multiple formats. This includes mobile tools, and we are pleased that ours have been nominated for 2011's Treehugger Best of Green Reader's Choice Award in the Science and Technology category. Please vote for us and share this by email, Twitter or Facebook:

On your mobile, add or explore green sites with @GreenMap. Nominated Best Eco App @TreeHugger! Vote today http://bit.ly/dFBjQM

Our apps are really useful, even in this early stage of development. We've just added the ability to add sites to Open Green Maps on either the mobile site (click GreenMap.org) or the Green Map iPhone App, so please suggest your favorite green spots as you visit them. We would like your help so please vote this week, until April 1 - there’s no need to register. Thanks for helping us get the word out.

We are also in a second contest, where you can vote everyday until March 27 to help us win $25,000 - http://bit.ly/ARCgms. Thanks for pitching in!

Green Maps reveal a landscape of hope in difficult times. With your help, we can continually reach, motivate and uplift more people each day, helping each lead the way to a better future for all.

Contact us at any time at info [at] greenmap.org or by phone at +1 212 674 1631. If you would like to support the community revitalizing work underway by our network in Japan, please add a note when you donate online or by mail (Green Map System, 220A East 4th St., New York, NY 10009).

And of course, consider starting a new Green Map project in your community and help it become stronger, greener and healthier - click GreenMap.org/join to get started.

With Love from Green Map

If you cannot read this or see links below, please click: http://www.greenmap.org/greenhouse/en/node/9333

February 14, 2011

Dear Friend of Green Map:

We're sending a big valentine to all our volunteers, donors, board members and mapmakers around the world. We at Green Map appreciate your spirit of civic engagement and heartfelt efforts to support a better environment for all communities!

When you think of showing your appreciation on Valentine's Day, giving to a nonprofit organization might not immediately come to mind.

However, we at Green Map know that many of you feel strongly that giving should extend beyond your immediate loved ones. If you're able to give a gift to someone this Valentine's Day, we ask that you think of Green Map. A trip to a florist, bakery or card shop isn't necessary - simply click GreenMap.org/donate to make a tax-deductible contribution. We'll be sending out a love note in return.

Why? Because when it comes to making the world a healthier, greener, more lovable place, we make a significant difference with the steadfast commitment of our global network. We are a part of over 725 communities worldwide, creating dialogues, workshops and events leading to powerful Green Maps that inspire everyday actions and long term commitments to a sustainable future.

2011 Could be our Highest Impact Year Yet

We've got great initiatives underway, and we need your help to reach our goals. Share your love for your community and the Earth with us. Make a donation or review us at Guidestar or on Google Places. And of course, use Green Maps every day to make your world a better place. Thank you for your support!

Green Map's 2011 and You!

Gratefully thinking back over all the good things that have happened this year, we felt compelled to create three year-end messages! The first message highlighted some of the 723 places where Green Mapmakers are generating local outcomes with global impacts, and the second focused on some of our tools and methodologies for youth, community and professional Green Mapmaking.

This message is about our hopes for 2011, including key ways we are planning to engage even more effectively with our ever-expanding roster of local leaders. Right now, we are all feeling the impacts of a world out of balance, with climate-related deaths doubling in 2010, and this decade the warmest ever. Communities, regional networks and individuals everywhere are doing what they can to address the causes of climate change, water scarcity, peak oil, peak soil – you name it – by going and growing local. Green Map System is right there with them! Your support will turn more of our network’s intentions into tangible resources that will resonate with school children, 'millennials', longtime residents, decision-makers and DIYers, empowering community participation in sustainable development in practical and inclusive ways.

These three messages are representative of the different levels at which we work to jumpstart new projects and involve more people in transforming the places where they live and work. We're proud of the way our open and inviting approach has empowered people to think, discuss and take action locally to address critical issues, often yielding remarkable and unexpected outcomes.

We invite you to share our stories, maps, images and other outcomes on your website or with your blog audience using one of our free widgets. Get youth fired up with a free mapmaking module, or share your views and favorite green sites on an Open Green Map. And if your community could benefit from a Green Map, take the lead and get started at GreenMap.org/join. You'll find it's a time-tested way to build your own skills and networks as you make your community – and the world we all share - a better place to live.

Help Us Get 2011 Off to a Great Start!

By the time Green Map System reaches its 16th anniversary on March 25, 2011, we expect to have even more to offer in terms of services and support! Please help us make it so!

Click GreenMap.org/donate or contact us at any time with your support and suggestions at info [at] greenmap [.] org, +1 212 674 1631, or make an appointment to visit us at 220A East 4th Street, New York, NY 10009.
Your Green Map Donation Supports Local, Globally!

Counting down the days until 2011, we at Green Map System have weathered a tough year by keeping the promises we made to local Green Map project leaders in the forefront of our thoughts and actions!

Addressing economic uncertainty in our practical way, we continued our work on the transformative social mapping platform we launched last year to dramatically reduce the cost, time and technical skills needed to create and share an interactive Open Green Map. Now we're cresting the 15,000 site mark, more than doubling our content in 2010! Each of these green sites is carefully researched and moderated locally, forming a uniquely valuable dataset available in desktop, mobile and widget formats. Version 2 of the Green Map iPhone App (available now) lets users suggest new green sites on the go! Winner of a 2010 Best of Green Award from Treehugger.com, this remarkable resource is just one many things we offer to increase community awareness and participation.

We're serious about inclusivity, regardless of access barriers to (or even interest in) the latest technology. Printed Green Maps in various formats continue to roll off the presses, guiding locals and visitors to experience nature, social innovations and other on-the-ground places that help make green living a viable prospect on any continent.

Accordingly, for the first time, we tested site markers along Manhattan's 14th Street this year. We involved Green Mapmakers from eight countries who contributed designs that were judged by people walking by as well as at our ‘10/10/10’ event. To be most effective in attracting street-level attention, our Green Map Icons need to be incorporated on markers in a way that really jump out! We'll further develop this casual but compelling way of promoting positive actions being taken by shops, cafés, community centers and other green sites in 2011, too.

We've helped make 'go local' a mantra since 1995, and this year we applied our community organizing and networking skills in a new way, helping develop a new coalition tasked with creating bicycling resources for people of diverse backgrounds in our own New York neighborhood. We've worked with many local universities this year as well. 15 interns, trainees and volunteers (see below) have served with us in 2010, and each departs our East Village office with a stronger understanding of practical ways to make sustainability an everyday part of their work, studies and life.

Special thanks to you, our donors and supporters – you make it all possible! Click GreenMap.org/donate to make 2011 an even more impactful year with your tax-deductible donation.
