Statement of Purpose

In the Rhone Alpes region of France, a series of Green Maps projects is underway (cartes vertes in French), under the leadership of FRAPNA the regional federation of environmental associations with the support of the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council. The first map published, in May 2006, was Villeurbanne (an urban city on the eastern side of the Lyon agglomeration, Rhône), a project led by the FRAPNA and local residents’ associations, in close cooperation with the Municipality of Villeurbanne. The emphasis is on public green spaces and services to and information for the citizen. The second is the North Isère, covering the Communauté d’Agglomération Portes des Alpes (CAPI), led by "Groupe Ecologique de Bourgoin," with other local citizens environmental associations, in coordination with the FRAPNA. Emphasis is on citizens information and initiatives and public access to countryside. Both these maps are online at www.frapna.org under (”Cartes Vertes”), in an interactive form in a portal using Google maps. This tool can be readily adapted for other Green Map projects. In the Rhône-Alpes region, further projects are now underway: Annecy (Haute Savoie), currently being launched with objective of completion by end 2007, the Vienne area (Isère, led by Gère Vivante). Other projects are currently in the preparation stage, including the Isle de Crémieu area of outstanding natural interest (Isère – Ain, led by Lo Parvi), Chambery (Savoie), Communauté de Communes du Genevois (Haute Savoie), a local web site covering eco-living, green agenda and including a Green Map for the Grenoble agglomeration (Isère), and a regional Carte Verte to cover the whole Rhône-Alpes region.

Local Language Overview
