Publish on Demand!

Here in the NY office we've been looking into an interesting new way to get your maps into the hands of eco-explorers:
through Publishing on Demand (POD), a recent development in the publishing world that allows ANYONE who wishes to publish a book, a piece of art, a CD or DVD, a pamphlet, etc. to do just that, without required print minimums or tricky copyright issues. One of the best POD services out there is Lulu.com, which allows you to upload a file from your computer and promote it immediately in their online marketplace, while you also gain access to a whole web community of self-publishers.

Now, how might this come in handy for you mapmakers? You can get your map professionally printed and copyrighted by registering yourself on www.Lulu.com and uploading your project. Next, you set a price for your map (and Lulu takes a 20% cut, which is how they make their money), and you're ready to go.

Of course, it might just be easier for you to take your map in digital format to your local printer to get it "published", which would save on shipping prices. Either way, I thought I would get the word out about this funky self-publishing phenomenon, just in case any of you global mapmakers might be interested in trying it out!

Peace :)
