Great News from Indonesia!
We are so pleased that the work of Jakarta Mapmaker Marco Kusumawijaya and colleagues in using post-tsunami community participatory restoration techniques has been received an important award – Dubai International Award for Best Practices 2008!

Marco has written the project description below. One year after the tsunami, on December 26, 2005, the Banda Aceh Green Map was published (linked at the bottom), and their rebuilding work continued. Involved in Green Mapmaking since 2001, he and his colleagues across the country have published a great diversity of maps, websites and related resources that celebrate biodiversity, green living, the rich cultural heritage and disaster prevention as seen at GreenMap.or.id. Award Winning Work in Banda Aceh

The approach that we pursued is that the people who survived the tsunami in 23 villages are the owner-clients who decide what they want in reconstructing their villages. We were their assistants with our limited respective specialised skills, and limited resources. Together we tried to integrate all aspects of reconstruction: economic recovery, shelter and settlement planning and construction, clean water and sanitation provision, alternative healing, organic recovery of farming, social re-organising, cultural and arts revitalisation, etc.

A Green Map was made to help "remember" places of significance.

One of many interesting things is that the people managed to re-use timber salvaged from tsunami for window and door frames for more than 400 houses. Those are the best hardwood in the region, used before in old houses.

In total we built 3,330 houses, 2 mosques, 23 community centers, a couple of elementary schools, all the roads in and surrounding the villages, some dykes, etc. We managed to install just a few photovoltaic panels worth 25,000 USD donated by GreenPeace.

The areas where we worked were among the hardest hit by the tsunami. The survivors were only 25 % of the total population before tsunami. But, the number of households remains almost the same. Every household has lost one, two, three, four, or even more members. According to the UN-HABITAT's survey of hundreds of samples by different organisations, the houses that we built rank the highest in technical quality and owner's satisfaction.

We think that the most important factor in the success of the reconstruction is the strong will of the survivors, and their social capital that gradually recovered. We just channeled this energy. They are remarkable people, when you know how to respect them not as victims, but as survivors of the tsunami. Many of them built the houses with their own hands, although they had the freedom and the means to hire others to do it for them. Some of them learnt the skills to build a house for the first time. All of them endured not only the pain of losing their beloved ones (most of their bodies were never found), but also the patience and hard work of rebuilding their homes, villages, communities, and lives. They are still doing so...

On March 19, 2008, the Westchester County Green Map was awarded the Best of New York Award in the Green IT category. Selections were made by the Center for Digital Government. The Best of New York Awards honors New York government agencies for IT innovation and excellence.

『東京自転車グリーンマップ』が、環境省主催の「ストップ温暖化大作戦」全国大会にて「モーダルシフト賞」を受賞しました！！

全国大会では、全国47都道府県から選ばれた温暖化防止の取り組み（一品）が東京に大集合しました。『東京自転車グリーンマップ』を除くその他のグランプリ受賞プロジェクトは、全て市町村やそれに関連した組織が主導するもので、『東京自転車グリーンマップ』はその中で唯一のNPO主導によるプロジェクトでした。

※「モーダルシフト」とは、交通手段の転換を図ること。主に環境問題の解決や交通渋滞の解消を目指して自動車の使用を減らし、鉄道や自転車などの他の交通手段に置き換えることを指します。

Congratulations to Masahiro Horiuchi and Tokyo Cycling Green Mapmakers!

Japan's Ministry of Environment held a ‘Stop Climate Change’ contest. “Tokyo Cycling Green Map” was the only project by a non-profit organization among the winners. Following a presentation of 47 projects primarily by local governments or other type of corporations that represent each prefecture, this Green Map won the Tokyo Grand Prix.

This is the third major prize for this team!

“Modal Shift” is a term referring to the conversion of transportation means. It mainly means reducing the use of automobiles and switching to other transportation modes, including subways and bicycles in order to solve environmental problems and ease congestion.

U.S Dept. of State acknowledges Green Map System's Founding-Director

United States Department of State Certificate of Appreciation was bestowed on Wendy Brawer for her contribution to the success of its International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) by sharing her time and professional expertise. The emphasis of the program is to increase mutual understanding through communication at the personal and professional levels.

Each year, almost five thousand individuals are invited by U.S. Embassies to the United States to meet American counterparts and to become acquainted with this country. Green Map System's Founding-Director and its diverse staff based in New York City are among the organizations who have welcomed geographically and professionally diverse groups of leaders in government and private sectors.

Green Map® Icons Receives Honorable Mention

Green Map® Icons, the heart of the Green Map movement, have been awarded an honorable mention from Eyebeam's Eco-Vis Challenge under the Eco-Icons category.

Eyebeam received 140 applications from all of the world, and awarded one winner and two honorable mentions in the two categories of the challenge (Eco-Icons and Eco-Visualizations). Green Map System award is inclusion in two upcoming exhibitions.

The jurors made their decision based on clarity of thought, design, concept,and execution. The award winners' submitted proposals will be on display January 5-26 (opening reception January 5, 6-8pm) and the fully realized projects will be included in our exhibition opening March 13, 6-8pm.

The Tokyo Cycling Green Map has won another award: "Eco City Created by Citizens" at the Eco Japan Cup Competition 2007. We expect the next version of this map in both print and online editions in 2008.

The Tokyo Cycling Green Map will have a presentation, December 14th at Eco Product Exhibition at Tokyo Big Site. Please visit this exhibition if you live in Tokyo, and explore many innovative eco ideas for our future.

Tokyo Cycling Green Map receives GOOD DESIGN Award!

The Tokyo Cycling Green Map was created to encourage development of a bike lane network and safer riding by Urban Ecology Tokyo and volunteers since 2006. The first printed citywide version was published in January 2007. There is also an interactive online edition in Japanese or in English that anyone can add green sites to and use to get involved in creating a better environment for cycling in this metropolis.

We're so pleased to share the news that the Tokyo Cycling Green Map won a GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2007 in the category of Communications - this is the most honorable design award in Japan!

The jury valued this beautiful map and the concepts behind Green Mapmaking. “Tokyo Cycling Green Map is a design evolution that emerged from citizens, not from corporations. It is important to raise the quality of “Design” in social movements led by non-profit organizations concerned with the networking of citizens to address social problems,” commented the jurors.

Tokyo Cycling Green Map will continue to develop printed and online maps with easier functions and utilize their excellent design skills in order to shift Tokyo toward becoming a more sustainable city.

Green Map System congratulates everyone involved with this terrific project on this prestigious award!

We discovered a new kind of anemone fish.

We discovered several kinds of unconfirmed anemone fish last winter.When it is a clear new kind, the one of them is confirmed that is a clear new kind by Dr. Uchida.He is the most famous specialist about anemone fish in Japan.All of them are nocturnal.
Aichi Green Map was chosen as the "imminent wildlife investigation" group that Ministry of the Environment sponsored in 2007.

A Green Map Site Receives Local Recognition

The Botanical Garden of the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira in Colombia, was distinguished as "Environmental Project 2006" by the local government.

The City Council of Pereira recognized this important project for its contribution to the environmental education.

This biodiverse garden was included in the UTP's Green Map, a university campus project located in the traditional coffee growing ecoregion of Colombia.

El Jardín Botánico de la Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira en Colombia fue distinguido como "Proyecto Ambiental 2006" por el gobierno local.

Mapmaker and Rural Advocate Receives National Award

Rev. Mac Legerton of Pembroke, North Carolina has been selected as the recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Service to Rural Life Award of the Rural Sociological Society (RSS)

Dr. Stephen Gasteyer, 2007 RSS Awards Chair, stated: “The purpose of the Distinguished Service to Rural Life Award is to recognize a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the enhancement of rural life and rural people. Rev. Legerton embodies the spirit of this award with his hard work and his commitment to social justice and enhancing the quality of life of rural people. In a county that at once embodies the diversity of rural America and the wrenching economic transformation caused by international globalization, Rev. Legerton’s organization, the Center for Community Action (CCA), has provided a ray of hope by empowering local citizens for positive social change.”

Its Green Map Project is the only rural project selected in the world to be included in the first, international Green Atlas on the World Wide Web.
