Declaración de Intención

During the initial concepting phase of the Grand Rapids Green Map project, we adopted the statement from Peter Turchi’s Maps of the Imagination, “We chart our cities, so we chart ourselves.” It aptly described the relationship of map and community, a foundation of the Green Map System. One of the goals of our project was that the map represent an active system. Grand Rapids is a city in the process of rebuilding and revitalization, and the people, specifically the members of the Sustainable Business Forum (SBF), are at the forefront of that endeavor. Their members provided us an ideal cross-section of the local and regional sustainable-minded individuals, businesses, and organizations. Through an analysis of the members activity, we realized that Turchi’s statement also worked in the reverse – chart ourselves, chart our city. An interesting direction developed – the Grand Rapids Green Map would map the activity of the SBF. Showing the reach and diversity of the members and their involvement in the “green movement” would demonstrate their concern, strength, and dedication in making Grand Rapids and its citizens tangible representations of a sustainable community.
