About this Mapmaker

The Hayward Nutritional Learning Community project educates students, families, parents, and community members about how to lead a healthy life through eating fruits and vegetables and being active.

Declaración de Intención

The Hayward Green Map is being created for students and families showing the healthy living resources available in the Hayward community. This is an outreach project to consolidate and spread information about how to lead a healthy lifestyle using the resources that exist in Hayward. This project will be very beneficial for our community because it will convey information to language learners in a clear, concise and understandable way. We will encourage fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity with this map. It will contain school gardens, farmers markets, supermarkets, health centers, parks, locations for physical activity, bike routes, and more.

Hayward is a community of 149,205 occupying 62.55 square miles. It is known as the "Heart of the Bay" because it is nestled in between San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. According to the 2000 census, the population of Hayward is:
African American: 10.6 percent
Asian/Pacific Islander: 20.5 percent
Hispanic: 34.2 percent
White: 29.2 percent
Other: 0.9 percent
