We are proud to announce the presentation of the Frost Campus Green Map at the Fleming Geomatics Institute Open House, Thursday, August 16 2007. The Fleming Green Map Project was initiated in January 2007 to support the Frost Sustainable Campus Initiative which strives to improve the sustainability of the campus. The Initiative, and the map, make use of Lindsay Cole's Campus Sustainability Assessment Framework (CSAF)(2003) to measure progress in a series of over 160 social, economic and ecological indicators. The Green Map helps the Initiative publicize its activities, measure progress, and energize the college community around its goals.
The Frost Campus Green Map is an online product, created using ArcMap, ArcIMS, and ArcSDE software. Sustainable elements in and around the college are represented by icons that can be clicked upon to produce pop-up windows with information, photographs and other media, and statistical information about the associated CSAF indicator. The map itself is updated through a unique interface that allows a college staff member to easily add new information, or correct existing information as conditions change at the campus.
The Frost Campus Green Map is part of the worldwide network of Green Maps, first begun in New York City by Wendy Brawer, and bound together internationally by a set of common icons. Its design and development is part of a cooperative project completed by students in the Geographic Information Systems program at Sir Sandford Fleming College.
