Our map project is currently in the data-collection stage - we are taking photos of target litter zones, actually counting dog poo (!) and monitoring dog bin usage, signing citizens up to pledge to clean up after their dogs, holding litter clean ups.
Our map will chart parks, woodlands, green spaces and neighbourhoods of Dunipace. The basic mapping team consists of Michelle McCallum and Christine Bell. Data collection is through volunteers of Community Green Initiative, and a group of Brownies under the guidance of their Brown Owl Tracy McNeil.
Through the hands-on process of fact-gathering and being out and about, talking to our citizens about cleaning up the mess, more and more are becoming aware that we can actually fix this problem and change attitudes. We are especially involving our children, as they are our greatest resource and hope for a better cleaner future for this wee burgh.
We will publicize the map through the CGI newsletter NEW LEAF NEWS, its website, blogs, etc. The map at the website will include before and after pictures of areas CGI cleans up.
Over the next year we will chart the success of CGI's Green Dog Walkers project (dog walkers wear a logo armband as a sign that they clean up & carry extra doggie bags to lend those who forgot to bring one. Backed by the council's big advertising campaign, this social experiment is working and attracting global interest!), using the map to show if there has been a decrease in dog poo in specific areas where a high volume of dog-walking takes place.
LEAVE ONLY PAWPRINTS is our battle cry!
