About the Map:

Willamette University is located in Salem, Oregon. It was recently named the most sustainable university in the United States by the National Wildlife Federation. The motto of Willamette's College of Liberal Arts is, "Not unto ourselves are we born," and reflects the committment of the faculty, administration and students to creating a better earth for everyone. This map will, hopefully, increase students' awareness of the environmentally friendly options open to them everyday around campus. About the Map:

The Portsmouth Green Map was conceived and created as a partnership between Portland Green Map, a citywide community mapping organization, Portsmouth Vision 20/20, a community development organization located in the Portsmouth Neighborhood, and the Science Club at Portsmouth Middle School. Over the course of several months, students at Portsmouth Middle School used GIS (Geographic Information System) software to create maps of their neighborhood that incorporate environmental assets and special features. This is the product of their work, a map of Portsmouth neighborhood, for the Portsmouth neighborhood, created by the students of Portsmouth Middle School. This map is meant to show Portsmouth Neighborhood residents interesting information about environmental sites in and around the neighborhood. The icons, which have been used on Green Maps all over the world, mark the locations of certain types of sites in the neighborhood, from good places to see the autumn leaves to local contaminated sites.

About the Map:

Nishinomiya-kofu senior high school students charted their campus and the city of Nishinomiya and Imazu Area. On Nov. 9th, 2002, the Nishinomiya Green Map was displayed at Nishinomiya Kofu Senior High School's Cultural Festival. Using the Nishinomiya Green Map as a reference, the "Geographic Information" class was able to reproduce it in a digital format and available in a website.

About the Map:

Green Map is the entrance of town development. Mr. Kashima tolds he wants to solve local issues by himself as much as possible and if he can’t, he wants to do so with his colleagues, and if they still can’t solve, they want to work with government. They act for the purpose of improving their town as much as possible by working with several issues contributing their communities in a positive way. Among their activities, Green Map is a tool for people to enjoy watching their town. Thus, the most important thing is not mapmaking but participation of citizens in the spirit of self-help and mutual assistance. We have hold town walking with many kinds of groups, including Boy Scout and elementary school/high school students. We realized most of participants who got interested in mapmaking cannot continue their activities after completing the map, and we are searching for the way participants can continue their activities, such as adopting community currency. About the Map:

We took in Green Mapmaking in Child Eco Club and nature walking. We took advantage of connections that members have, for example, a qualified nature-walk instructor Mr. Tamada and his colleagues created a map in cooperation with a parent-child nature-walk group of Chitahanto. He created “Handa Child Eco Club” and children member participated in Green Mapmaking. Mr. Yamada told children were getting interested in mapmaking by having discussion with each other and choosing icons at the nature walk. At first, mapmaking activity was only in Handa City, but it spread to all over the region in Chitahanto. Besides, we have a new connection through map making. For instance, we start Green Mapmaking in the spirit of “fostering children’s heart through having connection with nature” at first, but we add “welfare” to the theme after meeting wheelchair users. Previously, we focused on mapmaking but are planning to familiarize our Green Map in our communities with holding workshops in the future. There are no updates on this project.

The theme of Chitahanto Green Map is children, nature, and welfare. The purpose of the map is heightening children’s sensitivity through having contact with nature.

About the Map:

We're so pleased to share the news that the Tokyo Cycling Green Map won a GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2007 in the category of Communications - this is the most honorable design award in Japan! The jury valued this beautiful map and the concepts behind Green Mapmaking. “Tokyo Cycling Green Map is a design evolution that emerged from citizens, not from corporations. It is important to raise the quality of “Design” in social movements led by non-profit organizations concerned with the networking of citizens to address social problems,” commented the jurors. Tokyo Cycling Green Map will continue to develop printed and online maps with easier functions and utilize their excellent design skills in order to shift Tokyo toward becoming a more sustainable city. There are no updates on this project.

Tagline/Slogan:

The Tokyo Cycling Green Map was created to encourage development of a bike lane network and safer riding by Urban Ecology Tokyo and volunteers since 2006. The first printed citywide version was published in January 2007. There is also an interactive online edition in Japanese or in English that anyone can add green sites to and use to get involved in creating a better environment for cycling in this metropolis.
