The purpose of this green map is to update documentation compiled in the Atlantic Highlands Environmental Resource Inventory, to report about the natural resource characteristics and environmental features of the area. Ideally, the map would be used as a tool for planning and decision making in the community. Resource protection initiatives are only one area in which it could be utilized.

The map itself, while somewhat of an ongoing project, is intended to be completed as quickly as possible, with an optimistic outlook of three to four weeks. The surveying will be conducted by a group of volunteers. Each volunteer will specialize in one category, such as natural sites, or a certain geographic range.

Atlantic Highlands is a small borough located on the Jersey shore, next to Sandy Hook. It has a somewhat diverse environment and ecosystem for a town of its size. A large number of different species inhabit its natural areas, of which there are plenty. It is home to both shaded woods and sandy beaches in an area approxamitely one and a half miles long by one mile wide.
