About this Mapmaker

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site is a 386 km navigational corridor which crosses Southern Ontario between Trenton in the South and Port Severn in the North and connects Lake Ontario with Georgian Bay.

Statement of Purpose

The Heritage Values Mapping System is a 3-year community mapping project bringing together municipalities, conservation groups, citizens’ groups and first nations across the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) from Port Severn to Trenton. There are two aspects to this mapping project: collecting cultural heritage values data in the communities and analysis of the natural and cultural heritage values data through GIS. The former aspect is primarily where we require the assistance of Fleming EMX students. Cultural data will be collected on paper and using Open Green Maps – a community mapping website. The key to data collection will be involving community groups, schools and seniors centres as well as community advertising in newspapers, radio, television and internet. Phase 1 of this project began in February 2011 with the ‘southern sector’ of the TSW from Rice Lake to Trenton. Phase 2 will encompass the area from Kirkfield to Port Severn – the ‘northern sector’ – and will be the focus of our work in winter 2012. Finally, Phase 3 will take place in the Kawartha Lakes.
