Statement of Purpose

In recent years, there has been an explosion of growth in sustainable food systems across the US, particularly in New York City. Research indicates that we are approaching a tipping point for food productivity in the five boroughs. Further development of sustainable local food production in urban areas has the potential to reduce food transportation costs and environmental degradation, encourage economic development, mitigate the urban heat island effect, storm water runoff, and waste stream, provide educational opportunities, and reduce disparities in access to healthy foods. On the local level, access to information about sustainable food can be fragmentary and inaccessible. The goal of the Irie project is to create a web-based application that aggregates information on the sustainable food industry. Through an interactive map, consumers are able to access information about a variety of sustainable food producers from farms to breweries to coffee roasters. This work is informed by research on comparable interactive media tools, reports on the potential of sustainable urban food systems, and discussions with farmers, academics, and food activists. The Irie map enables and encourages consumers to support sustainable urban food systems, share information within their community, and utilize the power the demand-side economy has on food production.
