This map is intended to be a companion to my artist's project: MAIZE FIELD. In the spring of 2010 I will be planting Northeastern, native varieties of corn in areas of Brooklyn where Native Americans historically cultivated their corn fields. These areas include Boerum Hill and Canarsie. The MAIZE FIELD project aims to participate in the continual change that defines the city by highlighting a historical past then integrating that history back into the present landscape. The planting and growing of corn is like a living excavation that can transform an urban space in a positive way. I'm working on creating a map that will link the corn gardens of MAIZE FIELD, as well as the neighborhoods and histories of Boerum Hill and Canarsie, Brooklyn. The idea is to create a bike route from one garden to the other. Along the way the map will indicate places of historical interest--for example, where there once was a pond, a village, a farm, an Indian pathway. This information will be based in part on the maps from the book "Indian Paths in the Great Metropolis". It will also point out along the route places where there is currently a community garden, a farmers market, and any other green initiative.
