As sustainability becomes the most prominent social issue for future generations, it’s very important that people have the manner to live a more practical and sustainable life. College students consistently have the worst eco-friendly habits, but often lack the resources to know how to assist mother earth. With the creation of an environmentally minded and user-friendly map that allows students to realize the ease of practicing sustainability around their own campus, students will be more willing to participate in eco-friendly activities. A freshman might not recognize that a recycling center is on his walk to his morning class or that a farmers market with over 30 certified organic farmers is a cheaper and healthier grocery option. With a enrollment of 30,000+ and a population of 67,000+ the area has a great opportunity to make a difference.
Our system of Green Map will be customized to greatest maximize a student’s and communities ability to make the correct ecological decision in their own life. Local business’ will be able to gain "green" reputations by associating themselves with our map. This Green map would span the entire University of Iowa campus, which is integrated within downtown Iowa City business center, and it would be focused on green businesses, green technology, and outdoor activities. As a group we understand that most environmental movements start as a grassroots campaign. We see this as an opportunity to use our skills in geographic information systems to make a considerable difference within the school and community of Iowa City, Iowa.
