In July, 2009 a group of local youth in Mombasa, Kenya called Kijani (literally meaning ‘leaf’ in Swahili) came together to discuss and map some of the environmental challenges facing Mombasa Island. The map is a colourful and graphic representation of the hazards and challenges facing Mombasa Island but also features area’s where sustainable living is taking place. The workshop organizers plan to use this map to lobby their local governments to consider the inclusion of more green space and green initiatives into their city planning.
