NYC's Nature & Culture Map

LoMap is a cross-community close-up view of downtown NYC's diverse environment. 250 youth of all ages from nearly 20 schools and clubs have nominated, drawn and described wonderful natural and cultural places they want to celebrate and raise awareness about! Designers at the Green Map System have composed and published LoMap in April 2001. It's both printed on 100% recycled paper and posted on the internet right here! News FLASH! LoMap was updated and re-printed in August 2004!

View LoMap with a spirit of discovery and make the places on it part of your daily life! Everyone can help sustain nature and culture on this island:

It's our world, let's help make sure it ripens into the Green Apple!

LoMap is dedicated to NYC's youth.

LoMap covers LOwer MAnhattan's diverse neighborhoods and villages from the southern tip of this island to the top of Madison Square Park at 27th Street, from river to river.

There are many positive aspects to living downtown, despite the sadness of the 9/11 tragedy. Kids are doing so many great things here!

LoMap covers an area approximately two miles wide by four miles long. On this website, each map section is about two/thirds of a mile square, or roughly one square kilometer. Manhattan has 20 blocks per mile above Houston Street.

New York City is 378 square miles in all - Manhattan Island is just 26 square miles of these. It's a wonderful place where cultures and currents converge! NYC is in New York state, of course, it's also located in the Hudson River Valley Bioregion and on the Atlantic Flyway.

LoMap and the city-wide Green Apple Map are local projects of the Green Map System, an eco-cultural organization based in NYC and active in 135 urban environments around the world. See all the Green Map projects, including a preview of NYC's youth-made maps, at www.greenmap.org. And at NYC's new GreenAppleMap.org site, you can find out much more about each NYC Green Map, including this one!

Not every site on LoMap is appropriate for all ages. NYC changes constantly, so call the sites before making a special trip. LoMap is for informational purposes only. While every effort has been made to be accurate & reliable, information herein is not guaranteed by Green Map System.

Get Involved! Post your stories about the new downtown sites you've discovered here or mail us a postcard!

We really enjoyed the process of creating LoMap! Thanks to all the youth and adults who helped make it happen. We have decided to make a model so this new form of Green Mapping can be used in other communities. Click the Big Picture for details.
