Think Global, Map Local!

Green Map® System promotes inclusive participation in sustainable community development worldwide, using mapmaking as our medium.

We support locally-led Green Map projects as they create perspective-changing community ‘portraits’ which act as comprehensive inventories for decision-making and as practical guides for residents and tourists. Mapmaking teams pair our adaptable tools and universal iconography with local knowledge and leadership as they chart green living, ecological, social and cultural resources.

Over 550 unique, vibrant Green Maps have published to date, and another 450 are interactive Open Green Maps. Hundreds more have been created in classrooms and workshops by youth and adults. Both the mapmaking process and the resulting Green Maps have tangible effects that:

  • Strengthen local-global sustainability networks
  • Expand the demand for healthier, greener choices
  • Help successful initiatives spread to even more communities

Green Map System has been developed collaboratively since 1995, and the movement has spread to over 950 cities, towns and villages in 65 countries. Along with our network of regional hubs and community-led Green Map projects, we share the award-winning outcomes through Mapmakers profiles, photo albums, our blog, newsletters, organizational booklet and through Green Map books and media productions, workshops and other public presentations.

This website is the gathering point for both the makers and users of Green Maps, and offers inspiration to everyone interested in a sustainable future.

We recently launched an exciting new participatory mapmaking website, the Open Green Map. With 29,000 sites already on view, Open Green Map is revolutionizing Green Mapmaking, creating an interactive space for everyone to share their insights, images and impacts about local green sites of all kinds. Open Green Map connects the booming 'go local,' green development and ecotourism movements, empowering widespread participation in critical local environment, climate and equity issues worldwide. Based on open source and familiar mapping technologies like Google Map, Open Green Maps are always available, easily updated, expanded and explored in online, mobile and custom formats, to celebrate sustainability and social resources without barriers. Enrich today's world and envision a verdant, hopeful future with Open Green Map! Explore this social mapping platform now and donate to support this effort!

Take Green Map With You!

Joining the mobile revolution in 2010, Green Map System has two new sustainable living resources - a mobile website designed for all internet-enabled cell phones and the first Green Map iPhone App! Ideal for locals and tourists alike, both feature the beta version of "What's Green Nearby?™" a handy tool for connecting with green resources on the go. You can suggest new sites, too, as you visit them. The iPhone App includes 10 additional sections, delivering an insightful view into the impacts of this global movement through its Green Maps, videos, photos, Twitter, blog and much more. Simply type into any phone's internet browser for the mobile website, or click for the App (or search Green Map in the Apple Store).

Online since 1995, this website,, was re-launched in May 2007 as a presentation, collaboration and resource center. We named this content management system the Greenhouse for its ability to cultivate and preserve our diverse ‘garden of Green Maps’). Today, you can explore it in Spanish, Japanese and Chinese! Download a list of all Green Map projects, or click About the Mapmakers to find out more about the people behind movement. In the continually expanding Maps section, find fresh locally-created editions from all parts of the world!
