Green Map,

Gyeonggi-do Green Map Website

Finally, now we can experience the first completed Green Map published in South Korea, 'The Gyeonggi-do Green Map' created by the Local Agenda 21 - PurenGyeonggi 21 - on the internet!

In Korea, interest in eco-friendly living has increased among verified government organizations. At the same time, around the world, Green Map making became a very popular campaign as well. Therefore, it is pretty interesting news that 'The Gyeonggi-do Green Map' was completed as the first step in Korea. You can explore the map at greenmap.kr and learn about the organization at ggag21.or.kr.

Gyeonggi-do is a state that includes Seoul, the capital of Korea. While you may have heard about Seoul's recent green accomplishments, the state has their own long-term sustainable development project underway. Especially, they are focused on creating pleasant urban environments.

There were some projects between Green Map System and South Korean NGOs, agencies and universities over the years. However, none had published a complete Green Map yet, so this outcome in Gyeonggi-do receives credit for a remarkable result. The project has also held a ‘2010 Green Map Contest’ to collect and access the public's opinion, and some participants recieved awards for their keen reports about Gyeonggi-do’s first Green Map. It would be a great case study for anyone who has highly interested in Eco-tourism and Environment in Korea.

Moreover, there are three noticeable characteristics about the Gyeonggi-do Green Map:

• It is registered in a very friendly way as '우리동네 그린맵 (My Town GreenMap)', which is based on Korean words, at the website.

• The people making this map in Korea have translated Green Map Icons (version 3) to help local users understand the meaning quite easily for their own local situation. Working with the Green Map office in New York, the Korean Icon Poster will soon be available at GreenMap.org/icons.

• Also, while many others are using the Open Green Map to quickly and easily create an interactive Green Map, the underlying Google Map lacks detail in Korea. Gyeonggi-do selected the 'Naver Map' which is made by a popular portal site, Naver, in Korea and functions in a very similar way to Google Map. Therefore, they adopted it to produce their Green Map because many Koreans prefer Naver.

In 2011 there is a special focus on Korea at the New York office, in part because Jinhwa Ju, a marketing trainee from Seoul will be on staff through July 2011. You can reach her at trainee [at] greenmap [dot] org or simply click GreenMap.org/join to find out more about getting involved and registering as a Green Mapmaker. Then, you can access all of the tools and develop a great project with your school, university, city, company or community group. As a result, we hope that more and more Green Map projects with take place from now on in Korea.
