Cape Town Green Map Congratulates Lumkani Fire Detection

Lumkani Fire Detection

Lumkani Fire Detection has been announced as one of the top 5 final winners for Chivas Regal’s search for the next big idea in social enterprise, The Venture.

Lumkani went head-to-head with 15 international contenders at the Herbst Pavilion in San Francisco and walked away with $75K (about R950 000) for their low-cost fire detection device.

Lumkani is a social enterprise that seeks to address the challenge of shack fires and to minimise the displacement of families in urban informal settlements in South Africa and across the globe.

“It's incredible to be selected as a finalist for The Venture among some of the brightest young entrepreneurs in the social enterprise sector. Being part of The Venture has been a brilliant journey which culminated in the accelerator week in Silicon Valley and now this win. We are very proud to represent Africa,” said Lumkani’s Managing Director, David Gluckman.

“This is a big win for us, we can start rolling out bigger parts of our business model which require more capital, test new strategies and really scale our sales and marketing across the country, continent and world,” – explained Gluckman.

Paul Scanlon, managing director of Pernod Ricard for South Africa and Namibia, “This Venture is Chivas Regal’s meaningful and powerful way of saying we stand with using business as a force for good. Chivas Regal prides itself on being a brand that inspires nobility, and positive change.

We are extremely proud that the first installation of the global campaign has come home to South Africa. Lumkani is not only solving a local problem but a global issue. This is what appealed to us and clearly their presentation won the judges over in San Francisco.”

The local search for the second installation of The Venture begins on the 14 August 2015. For more information visit

About Lumkani Fire Detection:
Lumkani is a social enterprise that seeks to address the challenge of shack/slum fires in urban informal settlements in South Africa and across the globe.
They have developed an early warning system to reduce the damage and destruction caused by the spread of shack/slum fires in urban informal settlements.

Their detectors have been specifically designed to use heat detection instead of smoke detection to sense fire. Many cooking, lighting and heating methods used by people living in informal settlements produce smoke. This is the reason Lumkani devices use rate-of rise of temperature technology to accurately measure the incidence of dangerous fires and limit the occurrence of false alarms.
Lumkani is committed to continual innovation and inclusive design practices that are driven by testing and feedback.

"We are ecstatic to have done so well in the final of the Venture, to represent South Africa and to win capital that will see our operations expand across the country continent and the globe," notes David Gluckman.

Cape Town Green Map says BRAVO! Well done Lumkani.
