In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Professor of Design at the UniverCidade School of Visual Arts Luiza Rebello has been working with the Green Map System on and off for several years. Landscape Architecture

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

At Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Professor David Tulloch, who teaches Landscape Architecture as well as Environmental Geomatics and Geography, has been involving his students with the Green Map System for three years. He has been using GIS as well as working with PPGIS (Public Participation in Geographic Information Systems). He gives the following advice to other educators:

"Give the students lots of freedom and be ready for "failure".  I tend to find that there is something about the GMS that draws out very creative efforts (and often solutions), but in ways that can sometime lead towards materials that a) might never be publishable, b) might not really be a GreenMap (even by loose definitions), and c) might end up in a constant state of being "nearly finished".  But, IF the learning objectives are being satisfied, those limitations can be part of a great learning process. And sometimes, when you least expect it, a great product can pop out."

Community Engaged Research

University of Victoria

Maeve Lydon has been involved with Green Mapmaking for a decade, starting as the coordinator of the Common Ground-Ground Works community mapping project in the late 90s. As the project took shape, exciting maps charting themes like privately-owned fruit trees where the owners were offering their produce to local food banks, effectively rescuing 20,000 pounds of fresh apples, plums and cherries each year. As a Masters student, her thesis has been inspiring to many and led to the development of the multilingual Mapping our Common Ground book and the 'adoption' of the Victoria and Region Green Map project by the University of Victoria in BC Canada. Working together with wonderful designers and geographers including Ken Josephson, Charles Burnett and Patrick Hayes, this project has now published more than ten unique Green Maps with community groups, First Nations and university programs. Sustainable Civil Engineering

Michigan Technological University

Jesse Shapiro, a graduate student of Sustainable Civil Engineering at Michigan Technological University, spent a year producing a Green Map working on all aspects: research, map creation, website development, advertisement, and more. Shapiro describes:

"The power of a visual map. In this age of TV, movies, and the Internet, most people have become visual learners. It seems until now most "Green" knowledge has been found within books, individuals, and cliquish "green" groups. "Green" knowledge now has broad appeal and most only have time or patience for, the visual format. GMS provides us with a standardized form for many to learn this knowledge in a familiar and accessible format."

Sustainable Product Design

The Glasgow School of Art

Scotland's Glasgow Guide to Charity Shops and Green Map is being created by Hannah Clinch and Top 100, with help from product design students at the Glasgow School of Art, and others. The project is part of the Pollokshields Community Planning Partnership, a community regeneration program, and includes a branding initiative, open source technology initiative and more.Ian Grout who lectures on Sustainable Product Design has also been working on this project. He is eager to share ideas on Green Mapping, including his methodology:

1) We had a real client.
2) GMS director Wendy Brawer came to work for a week to start the project.
3) We ran a conference in Glasgow with workshops to understand the scope and need for greening the city.
4) Our students gathered information on all charity shops in Glasgow (75 in all) to use as a basis for developing real maps.
5) Our students worked in charity shops to understand the environment.
6) We ran workshops to clearly identify the user profiles of charity shop users.
7) The students developed their green maps in teams of 3 (we made 7 maps in total).
8) We phased the design process through; ideas, concepts, prototype, and refined prototype.
9) All the resulting maps could and were taken out into the city and used as a feedback to further refinement.
10) We had a shed load of fun.

Urban Studies

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

As an undergraduate student at MIT Jerrad Pierce created the GreenMap MIT as an independent student project working with ArcMap and using GIS. He also wrote a senior thesis entitled Improving the Cartographic Quality and Design of Greenmaps. Both the maps and the thesis are available on his website. Jerrad developed an innovative new way of showing the map's listings without using a numbering system: the grid of the map is mirrored on the listing page, so that each site's description shows in the corresponding box.

Interdisciplinary Subjects

New York University

Green Map director Wendy Brawer taught a class together with Dr. Robert Zuber at the NYU Gallatin School entitled 'Charting Sustainability in the Real World'. The course description reads as follows:

In this course, we'll be connecting with the local environment: Together, we'll create an expressive perspective on NYC's exhilarating urban culture/social ecology and develop resources for use by locally-led Green Map projects in cities and towns, neighborhoods and bioregions around the world, as seen at We'll interact with our community, drawing out options for sustainable living and asset appreciation, using high and low tech communication, design and education tools. Innovative course includes creating your own visual narrative of the urban experience, field work, guest speakers and presentations on the philosophy of sustainability and eco-feminism/justice. You'll discover how to work meaningfully toward a better common future.

School of the Art Institute of Chicago

At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago professor Nadine Bopp (whose area of study includes science, social science and architecture, interior architecture, and designed objects) has been teaching an interdisciplinary class entitled 'The Green Map Project' for five years. She offers this class three semesters each year as part of the school's 'Green Zone' course work which focuses on sustainable issues. First one of Chicago's neighborhoods is chosen, then fieldwork is carried out, and finally a Green Map is designed. The maps include neighborhood history, visual images, and urban sounds. Every year students are amazed by the number of sites that give residents and visitors 'healthy, environmental consumer choices'. However, they also see first hand that these choices are often limited in poorer neighborhoods, something they wish to change in the future.
