About this Mapmaker

'RESILIENCE-UK' is a voluntary body promoting Cultural Ecology as an on-line practical knowledge framework for education and training in community capacity building to increase resilience of cultures in ecosystems.

Statement of Purpose

When the UK biodiversity and sustainable development strategies were created the idea was mooted, though never implemented, that there should be a citizen's environmental network to spread ideas and practical achievements at a community level. The goal of 'Resilience in Wales' is to use the GMS to establish a citizen's network to record and promote the inclusive participation of people in planning actions to create sustainable communities. This wil be achieved within a cross-curricular knowledge framework of cultural ecology to unify the manifold themes which have a bearing on planning for local sustainability. These interdependent themes fall within the GMS categories of 'sustainable living', 'nature' and 'culture and society'.

Philosophy and key issues.
Sustainability is an attribute of dynamic, adaptive systems that are able to flourish and grow in the face of uncertainty and constant change. Resilience is
the capacity of a system to survive, adapt, and grow in the face of unforeseen changes. Where sustainability aims to put the world back into balance, resilience looks for ways to manage limited resources in an imbalanced world. Resilient cultures perpetually evolve through managed cycles of growth, accumulation, crisis, and renewal, and often self-organize into unexpected new configurations. Therefore action plans to increase resilience - resisting disorder - are the key to global sustainability. This stresses that the interdependence of ecological and social systems gives resilience a wider and deeper meaning than planning the response of emergency services to an acute disaster. This wider meaning in the here and now includes planning one's day to day activities to keep within Nature's productivity, maintaining local ecosystems in a favourable condition so as to maintain ecosystem services and promoting community plans for inclusive social betterment.

Wales is a small country of about three million people in a total area of 20 thousand km2. It has a north/south rural/urban inbalance of population, but is unified through a vision of sustainable development linking northern upland farmers with southern city dwellers. This holistic vision has been summarised as 'One Wales One Planet'.

Methodology: intended and actual impacts.
'Resilience in Wales' is designed to present case studies emphasising urban-rural linkages that can help to foster common approaches and activities which follow the principles of sustainable development in the context of systems thinking.

'One Wales: One Planet' requires the inclusive participation of all its citizens within a common understanding of the nation as a sustainable human ecological niche. In this context, the GMS is a tool for establishing a kind of on-line ecomuseum telling this story. Its sites consitute a gallery of local plans and action lists. They detail routes through the materials and energy descent necessary for establishing the required two-way feedbacks between natural systems and human behavior. By interacting with the map, urban and rural dwellers alike willl be able to discover common pathways to get into action and move towards planning resilient, low impact lifesyles.

Group, partners and audience

The group consists of volunteer educationalists, community activists, museologists and system thinkers.

The partners are voluntary groups operating action plans based on the goals of Agenda 21 and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

The audience is individuals and groups who wish to pursue the three E's of "sustainable development" i.e.: Environment, Economy and Equity.
